We can define domain names as a series of words separated by dots identifying an IP address. Computers, which are connected to the internet, have a IP number in other words IP address. We can connect to computers through these IP numbers. We can also visit websites through these IP numbers but it is hard to memorize or remember these numbers. Thus, we use domain names instead of IP numbers and these domain names direct us to IP numbers. We can think domain names as a telephone directory. We can not memorize all of phone numbers so we look at telephone directories and find the phone number that we are looking for. In the same way, when we type a domain name, it directs us to the IP numbers.
Selecting a Domain Name
Try to select a short domain name. Do not use more than three words in domain names. Because the shorter it is, the easier visitors can remember it.
Try to use the most important keywords in your domain names. Assume that you have a website about computers and its domain name is computers.com When the word "computers" is searched at search engines, you will be more advantageous than the others, because your domain name contains the word which is searched. That's why use keyword which express your website the best. You can use Google Keyword Tool to determine which word(s) to use according to their search volumes.
If a domain name that you want to register has already registered, you can generate similar domain names. For example: cellphones.com, cell-phones.com, cell-phones-4u.com etc.
Which Domain Registrar?
There are tons of domain name registrars but I prefer to register from godaddy.com. Godaddy is the biggest domain name registrar and has the biggest market share. They does not offer the lowest prices but I think that huge number of webmasters must have some reasons to select Godaddy.com
